What Is Time to Contact in Baseball?

You barrel everything on the tee. You square up front toss. Then a real fastball shows up and you are late, fouling pitch after pitch off the end of the bat. This is the number that explains it.

Time to contact is the elapsed time from the start of your downswing to impact, measured in seconds, and the MLB average is 0.149 seconds. Cut your time to contact without losing bat speed and you buy yourself more time to read the pitch before you commit. That is the whole game inside the swing.


What Time to Contact Actually Measures


Your coach keeps saying you are late, but late by how much? Time to Contact puts a number on it. It measures the elapsed time from the start of your downswing, the moment functional forward bat speed begins, not your waggle and not your load, to impact, in seconds.

“Late” is a feeling, and feelings drift from at-bat to at-bat. A number in seconds does not. Once you can see it, you can train it like any other rep, set a baseline and watch it move.

The Blast sensor mounts on the knob of your bat. It reads your swing from the Transition Event forward, so the clock starts when you actually go, not when you fidget in the box. The MLB average sits at 0.149 seconds. Two hitters can own the same bat speed and post very different Time to Contact numbers. The one who wastes motion before he goes is the one who runs out of time against the fastball.

Blast breaks your swing into five phases: Stance, Load, Transition Event, Swing, and Impact. Time to Contact lives inside that Transition-to-Impact window. Most of the time you can save hides in the Transition Event, the handoff from load to swing. Clean up that handoff and you shave tenths without swinging any harder. Once you know exactly where the clock starts, you can start shaving tenths off it on purpose.


Why It Wins At-Bats: The 0.4-Second Problem


Step in against a pitcher sitting 90-plus. A big-league fastball reaches the plate in roughly 0.4 seconds. In that sliver you read spin, gauge velocity, pick location, and still have to drive the barrel to the ball on time.

Your swing eats a chunk of that budget. If your Time to Contact is 0.18 seconds, you have already burned nearly half the pitch’s flight just swinging. That leaves you under half the flight to read spin and location, so you decide early and guess.

Shave your Time to Contact toward 0.15 and the math changes. Going from 0.18 to 0.15 hands you back three hundredths of a second. That sounds like nothing until you remember the whole pitch lasts 0.4, and three hundredths is a real slice of your reading window. You can wait a beat longer, gather more information, and still arrive. That extra window is exactly what a hitter’s reaction-time budget is built around, and it is why pitch coverage climbs. Quicker to the ball lets you decide later, and deciding later means fewer swings on pitches you cannot handle.


Time to Contact Benchmarks by Level


Recruiters ask where you stack up, so here are the marks to measure against. These are Blast Motion’s own directional benchmarks, pulled from our swing database of more than 400 million captured swings.

Baseball Time to Contact by level:

  • Youth: 0.17–0.23s
  • Middle School: 0.16–0.21s
  • HS JV: 0.15–0.20s
  • HS Varsity: 0.14–0.18s
  • College: 0.14–0.18s
  • Pro/MLB: 0.13–0.17s

The MLB average lands at 0.149 seconds. Find your level first, then read where you sit inside the range. Land at the top of HS Varsity at 0.18 and you have real room to work toward 0.14 without ever leaving the band. Notice how the ranges overlap. A strong high schooler can already swing inside the college window, and development rarely moves in a straight line. You might hold 0.16 for a full season, then drop to 0.15 once your bat speed and sequencing catch up. Chase the next range down, not a single magic number.

One swing does not set your number. Take a full round of swings and read the average, not your single best rep. Test the same way every time, same bat and same pitch speed, so you are comparing today’s swing to a fair version of yesterday’s. If your Time to Contact bounces from 0.15 to 0.20 across a round, chase consistency before you chase speed. A number you cannot repeat will not show up in the box.

Quick vs. Efficient: Don’t Chase a Lower Number


Watch the young hitter who hears “be quick” and lunges, throwing the barrel straight down at the ball. His Time to Contact drops, and so does everything that makes contact hard.

Casting the barrel down to the ball wrecks your On-Plane Efficiency, which measures how long your barrel stays in the hitting zone. You want 70% or better; the MLB average is 68.6%. Steepen your path to save time and that number falls, dragging your bat speed down with it.

Picture two versions of the same swing. In the first, your Time to Contact reads 0.16 and your On-Plane Efficiency sits above the 70% you want. In the second, you hear “be quicker,” cast the barrel down, and clip the number to 0.15. It looks like progress until you check On-Plane Efficiency, now slipping under the 68.6% MLB average, with bat speed sliding right behind it. You bought one hundredth of a second and paid for it in contact quality. That is not the trade you want.

Keep two ideas separate here. Early Connection tracks the angle between your torso and the bat, with a 90° target at the Transition Event. Hip-shoulder separation measures how much your hips lead your shoulders. They are different metrics, so do not treat them as one. Fix the tradeoff right at the Transition Event, where Early Connection wants that 90°. Hold the angle there and you can be quick and stay on plane in the same swing. The real goal is quick and efficient: stay in the zone while getting there fast, the same balance Driveline documented in its MLB bat-tracking analysis.


Drills to Get Quicker to the Ball


You keep fouling fastballs straight back or catching them a tick late. That is a Time to Contact problem, and these four drills attack it directly.

  1. Shoulder Slot Drill. Fixes a late, drifting upper half by grooving the path your barrel takes to the ball. Start slow and feel your back shoulder work down into the slot instead of flying open, then build to game speed.   2. Recoil Drill. Fixes wasted movement in your load so your swing starts on time. Take the barrel back, let it settle, then start forward from a quiet position so nothing leaks out before your Transition Event. Watch Time to Contact on the app drop as the extra motion comes out.
  3. Early Hover Drill. Fixes a slow trigger by getting you loaded and ready before the pitch arrives. Get to your hovering, loaded position early, before the ball is on the way, so you can fire on time instead of rushing.   4. Knob to Knee Drill. Fixes a long, looping entry by keeping the knob short and direct into the slot. Drive the knob down toward your back knee and into the slot instead of rounding it out and away. Watch Bat Speed hold or climb as the entry shortens, proof the shorter path did not cost you power.

Run them with two cues: “Slow and early, be ready to hit at release” and “Slow and early, short and direct to the ball. Hit the top inside seam.” Then check your work. Watch Time to Contact, Rotational Acceleration, and Bat Speed together. When all three move the right direction, you got quicker without giving anything back.
