Blast Motion FAQ

Blast Motion is a bat-mounted sensor starting at $149.95 that measures bat speed (MLB range: 66–78 mph), attack angle, and 8+ swing metrics, synced to your phone in real time. Below, we cover setup, pricing, benchmarks, and troubleshooting so you can find what you need fast.

Getting Started

What is Blast Motion and how does it work?

Blast Motion is a swing analysis sensor that attaches to the knob of any baseball, softball, or golf club. It uses an accelerometer and gyroscope to capture swing metrics (bat speed, attack angle, time to contact, and more) then syncs the data to your phone via Bluetooth in real time.

What’s included when I buy the Blast sensor?

You get the Blast sensor, a bat attachment, a charging cradle, and a 30-day free trial of the premium subscription. Download the Blast app (iOS or Android), pair the sensor, and you’re ready to swing.

How do I set up the Blast sensor?

Charge the sensor using the included cradle. Download the Blast app on your phone. Open the app, turn on Bluetooth, and follow the on-screen pairing steps. Add a bat profile with the correct bat weight and length, then start swinging. Setup takes under five minutes.

What devices are compatible with the Blast app?

The Blast app works on both iOS and Android devices. Some advanced features may vary by platform. Check the Blast Help Center for the latest supported device list.

Does the sensor work with any bat?

Yes. The sensor attaches to the knob of any standard baseball, softball, or golf club. For the most accurate readings, enter your bat’s exact weight and length in the app when creating a bat profile.

Metrics & Data

What metrics does the Blast sensor measure?

The sensor captures key swing metrics including:

  • Bat Speed — sweet spot speed of the bat at impact (MLB avg: 71.6 mph)
  • Attack Angle — vertical angle of the bat path at impact (MLB avg: 8.7°)
  • Vertical Bat Angle — steepness of the barrel at impact, viewed from the catcher
  • Time to Contact — total downswing time from load to impact (MLB avg: 0.149 sec)
  • Peak Hand Speed — fastest hand speed reached during rotation (MLB avg: 22.3 mph)
  • Power — composite of bat mass, acceleration, and speed (MLB avg: 4.5 kW)
  • On-Plane Efficiency — percentage of the swing spent on the correct swing plane (MLB avg: 68.6%)
  • Rotational Acceleration — how quickly the bat transitions from load into rotation (MLB avg: 15.1 g)
  • Early Connection — body-tilt-to-bat-angle relationship at the start of the downswing (target: 90°)
  • Connection at Impact — body-tilt-to-bat-angle relationship at contact (target: 90°)

What is a good bat speed for my age or level?

Bat speed benchmarks by level:

  • Youth: 40–56 mph
  • Middle School: 46–62 mph
  • HS JV: 55–65 mph
  • HS Varsity: 60–70 mph
  • College: 66–75 mph
  • Pro / MLB: 66–78 mph

Use these ranges as targets. Track your progress over time — consistent gains of even 2-3 mph can make a measurable difference at the plate.

What scores should I aim for in the Blast app?

Blast scores three swing qualities on the traditional 20–80 baseball scouting scale, calibrated to your level of play:

Plane Score — how consistently your barrel stays on the swing plane

Connection Score — how well your body and bat are aligned

Rotation Score — how quickly your bat accelerates into rotation

Target: Score above 50 for your level of play.

A 50 is average; 60+ is above average (top 16%); 70+ is elite (top 2%). The scale normalizes against your peers. A 60 at HS Varsity means top 16% of HS Varsity hitters, not top 16% of MLB. Set the correct level of play in the app so your scores compare against the right peer group.

How accurate is the Blast sensor?

Accuracy depends on correct calibration. Enter your exact bat weight and length in the app for the best results. Bat speed is calculated from the sensor at the knob, which differs from a radar gun measuring at the sweet spot. Both are valid, just different measurement points.

Sports & Use Cases

Can I use Blast for baseball and softball?

Yes. Blast supports both baseball and softball with dedicated modes in the app. The sensor works with any bat, wood, aluminum, or composite. Switch between sports in the app settings.

Does Blast Motion work for golf?

Yes. Blast offers a separate golf product and app for full swing and putting analysis. The golf sensor attaches to the butt of the club and measures tempo, face rotation, and other golf-specific metrics.

What age should kids start using Blast?

Blast recommends age 9 and up. Younger players can focus on building bat speed. As players mature, the deeper mechanics metrics (attack angle, on-plane efficiency, connection at impact) become more actionable for development.

Can coaches use Blast for team management?

Yes. Blast Connect gives coaches team reports, leaderboards, and remote training tools. Blast is used by college, travel ball, and academy teams at every level for player development. Coaches can track individual progress, compare players, and assign training targets, all from the web portal.

App & Connectivity

What is Blast Connect vs. the Blast app?

The Blast app captures swings and delivers real-time feedback during practice. Blast Connect is the web portal for deeper analytics, video review, team management, and historical data trends. Use the app on the field; use Blast Connect to dig into the numbers afterward.

Can I use the sensor without my phone nearby?

Yes. Offline mode lets the sensor capture swings without a phone connection. The data syncs automatically when you reconnect to the app. This is useful for games and practices where phones aren’t allowed or practical.

What is 3D Swing Tracer?

3D Swing Tracer creates a visual 3D representation of your swing path overlaid on recorded video. It shows the exact bat path through the zone so you can see attack angle, barrel position, and swing plane. Available with the premium subscription.

Can I record and review video of my swings?

Yes. The app auto-clips swing video and overlays your metrics directly on the footage. You can compare swings side-by-side, share clips with coaches, and review your mechanics frame by frame.

Hardware & Troubleshooting

How long does the sensor battery last?

The sensor provides up to 8 hours of active use on a single charge, enough for a full practice or doubleheader. Charge it using the included cradle before each session. If battery life drops noticeably, check that the sensor firmware is up to date in the app settings.

My sensor won’t charge or isn’t flashing. What should I do?

Make sure the sensor is seated properly in the charging cradle and that the cradle is plugged in. Clean the charging contacts with a dry cloth. If the sensor still won’t respond, try a different USB cable or power source. If the issue persists, contact Blast support for a replacement evaluation.

Why isn’t my sensor connecting to the app?

First, confirm Bluetooth is turned on and the sensor is charged. Close and reopen the app. If pairing still fails, forget the sensor in your phone’s Bluetooth settings and re-pair through the app. Make sure no other device is currently connected to the sensor. It pairs to one device at a time.

Can I get a replacement if my sensor or attachment breaks?

Yes. Blast offers warranty coverage for defective sensors. If your sensor or bat attachment is damaged, contact Blast support with your purchase details. They’ll walk you through the replacement process.
