Science of Sport and Blast Motion to Partner

PLAY BALL! The Science of Sport, an Arizona non-profit, and Blast Motion, a California-based sports company, are pleased to announce a dynamic, new partnership at the intersection of sports and education.
Science of Sport sparks a passion for mathematics and science in boys and girls by using sports to enhance their learning. Through their innovative curriculum, turn-key teacher training programs, and interactive camps, participants are motivated to learn the first principles of math, physics, and statistics as they apply to sports. Their integrated approach includes both academic and athletic components that cater to students of multiple abilities in the classroom and on the field.

Ricardo Valerdi, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona and founder of the Science of Sport says, “As educators we are always looking for tools that help make science and mathematics more fun for kids. The Blast sensors will help make abstract concepts – like a “good” swing – more tangible and measurable for kids. We plan to integrate the Blast Precision Motion Sensor and its video capture capability into our Science of Baseball camps for 5th-8th grade students in Arizona, California, Illinois, and beyond.”

Using sensors and technology from Blast, athletes are able see the mechanics of their swing, make meaningful adjustments and share their achievements in a new way.

“At Blast, we sit at the crossroads of science, sports, and technology. We’re excited to be involved in this program, and we see this as a great opportunity for our youth to experience the future of sports, and witness the benefits of real-time performance metrics overlaid on top of video. It makes learning how to become a better athlete fun, and the social media sharing allows them to compete in a whole new way. We are eager see all the creative new uses Science of Sport will have for this technology. We couldn’t pass up this opportunity to give back to young athletes.” states Mike Woods, Vice President of Sales at Blast Motion.
