How to Play Blast Home Run Derby: Rules, Requirements & FAQs

Share:

Blast Home Run Derby is a free in-app game for Blast Baseball and Blast Softball that turns your practice swings into home run competitions. You need a Gen 3 Swing Trainer or Swing Analyzer sensor and a compatible iOS device — no Premium Services subscription required.

Requirements to Play

  • Software: iOS only. Blast Baseball or Blast Softball app version 5.13 or higher.
  • Hardware: A Gen 3 sensor (Swing Trainer or Swing Analyzer). You can identify a Gen 3 sensor by its 12-digit serial number — the second digit on the top row is a 5 or greater. Check the serial number on the back of the sensor or in the app under My Sensor.
  • Subscription: Not required. Home Run Derby is a free feature.
  • Date of Birth: Required for all players, including self-certification of age or parental consent.

How to Play

  1. Connect your Gen 3 sensor and open Home Run Derby from the app.
  2. Each game is played in 2-minute periods, with one timeout available (up to 30 seconds).
  3. Take real, impact swings — Home Run Derby does not support air swings, and the sensor must stay connected throughout since it’s an online experience.
  4. Progress through four player levels based on home run distances tied to your age. Leveling up unlocks the next distance target once you hit the required number of home runs.
  5. Each home run scores 1 point. Hit 3 home runs in a row and you earn 2 bonus points for the streak.

Timeouts and Distance Boosters

You start with at least 1 timeout per game. Earn more by taking swings in Practice mode — 1 extra timeout for every user-created session with a minimum of 50 valid swings. Distance boosters (worth 20% of the target home run distance) are applied automatically when a swing is close to clearing the fence, and you earn additional boosters by taking 50+ valid practice swings in a calendar week.

FAQs

Why can I hit more home runs in Home Run Derby than in real games?
The game assumes every swing hits the ball at the sweet spot for optimal distance, and the target home run distance per level is based on your age — it may not match the actual center field distance of your real-world playing field.

Does Home Run Derby save my stats to Blast Connect?
No. Game actions and sessions are not available in Blast Connect. Stats are saved locally on the app and tied only to the logged-in user — deleting the app deletes your game stats.

What sensors work with Home Run Derby?
Only Gen 3 Swing Trainer or Swing Analyzer sensors are supported.
