Your athlete finishes a cage session, opens the Blast app, and stares at a wall of numbers. Bat speed, on-plane efficiency, connection, a stack of colors. Learning how to read Blast Motion app data turns that clutter into a plan.
Reading your Blast data comes down to three layers.
- First, the Swing Quality Scores (Plane, Connection, Rotation) on the 20 to 80 scale.
- Second, the raw swing and impact metrics like bat speed and attack angle.
- Third, the green, yellow, and red Blast iQ colors that flag the one thing to fix next.
Master those three, and every session gives you a direction.
1. Start With the Screen: Scores vs. Metrics
A parent holds up the app and asks, “Is a 55 good?” without knowing whether that is a score or a metric. That mix-up is the first thing to fix.
Blast shows two different kinds of numbers, and they answer two different questions.
- Swing Quality Scores are the Plane, Connection, and Rotation (PCR) grades. Blast iQ scores each on the 20 to 80 scouting scale, calibrated to the athlete’s level of play. They tell you how good the swing was relative to peers.
- Raw metrics are the measurements themselves: Bat Speed in mph, On-Plane Efficiency as a percentage, Early Connection in degrees. They tell you exactly what the swing did.
Scores live on the swing summary as a quick read. Tap into a swing to see the underlying metrics behind each score. 2. The Green, Yellow, and Red Colors, Decoded
A hitter sees three reds and panics, then chases all three at once and fixes none. The colors exist to stop exactly that.
Blast iQ color-codes each swing so you know where to look first:
- Green means the metric sits in your target range. Leave it alone.
- Yellow means it is drifting. Monitor it across the session.
- Red means it is off target and costing you. This is your focus area.
Work the red first, and only one red at a time. If bat speed and connection both flag red, pick the one that drives the bigger outcome for your athlete’s level and drill that. Chasing every color at once scatters your reps and stalls progress. One red, one drill, one week.
3. The Core Swing Metrics and What “Good” Looks Like
A varsity hitter barrels balls in the cage but pops them up in games. The metrics tell you why. Here is what each core number means and the target to hold.
- Bat Speed: the barrel’s speed through the zone. Baseball targets by level: Pro 66 to 78 mph, HS Varsity 60 to 70 mph, Middle School 46 to 62 mph.
- On-Plane Efficiency: how long your barrel stays on the pitch plane. Aim for 70% or higher; the MLB baseball average is 68.6%. Learn more in what On-Plane Efficiency measures.
- Early Connection: the body-to-bat angle at the Transition Event. Target 90 degrees, inside an 80 to 105 degree range.
- Attack Angle: the vertical angle of the bat at impact, productive around 6 to 14 degrees. See how attack angle works.
- Rotational Acceleration: the “0 to 60 time” of the swing. A high RA is what turns a fast bat into game power.
- Time to Contact: how quickly you get the barrel to the ball, in seconds.
Keep Connection and hip-shoulder separation separate. Connection is the body-to-bat relationship; hip-shoulder separation is the X-Factor that loads rotational power. One honest caveat on precision: a peer-reviewed 2022 study in the journal Sports found knob-mounted bat sensors track bat speed reliably (mean ICC 0.78) but read swing angles less precisely (mean ICC 0.58), and bat-speed accuracy can slip at very high swing speeds. Treat Attack Angle as directional, not exact, and trust the trend.
4. Reading Blast Softball and Blast Golf Data
A 16U travel hitter and a middle school hitter should never chase the same speed, and neither should borrow a baseball number. These Blast Softball benchmarks, drawn from Blast’s swing database of fastpitch hitters, stand on their own:
- Recreational: 32 to 46 mph
- Travel 12U to 14U: 38 to 52 mph
- HS JV: 42 to 56 mph
- HS Varsity: 49 to 63 mph
- Travel 16U to 18U: 54 to 66 mph
- College: 58 to 70 mph
- Professional: 63 to 75 mph

5. Read a Set of Swings, Not One
An athlete takes one bad rip, sees a red, and rebuilds a swing that was fine yesterday. One swing lies. A set of swings tells the truth.
Read the trend across a full session or round, not a single rep. Ten swings show you your real average and your consistency, which is what actually plays in games. 6. Turn Your Numbers Into the Next Drill
A red metric is only useful if it points to a fix. Match the flagged metric to the right drill instead of guessing.
- Low bat speed from poor hip-shoulder separation: run the Torque Drill plus the Knob to Knee Drill to train the hips to lead the shoulders. Do not reach for the Dead Legs Drill here.
- Over-rotation, pulling off the ball, or Early Extension: the Dead Legs Drill isolates the upper body for exactly these, not for building bat speed through separation.
- Casting, where the barrel leaks away from the body: the Stop at Contact Drill. Cue it with “Short to it, long through it.”
- Weak or inconsistent forward move, or Sway: the Walk Through Drill. Coach it with “Land firm, turn behind your front hip.”
- Poor hip-shoulder separation generally: the Shoulder Slot Drill or Torque Drill, matched to the flagged dimension.
Use “Back pocket down the line” to feel the pelvis load on rotational work. Keep mind and mechanics together: an athlete thinking about mechanics mid-swing usually breaks down, so drill the fix in practice, then compete free. Run the matched drill for a week, then let the sensor confirm the change.
